What is my biological age? It is an estimate of how old your body seems based on how it is functioning, not on your birth date. Your calendar age goes up by one every year no matter what you do. Your biological age can run ahead of it or behind it, depending on things like metabolism, fitness, sleep, stress and habits.
What is my biological age, exactly?
There is no single official number. Biological age is a modeled estimate, and different methods use different inputs. The Cleveland Clinic describes it as a measure of how your cells and tissues are aging, which can differ from the years you have lived. Two people born the same year can land a decade apart.
How is biological age measured?
- Questionnaires and body measurements. Age, sex, waist, activity, sleep, smoking, alcohol and similar inputs. Fast and free, but the least precise. Good for a first estimate and for spotting what is adding years.
- Blood biomarkers. Panels that look at glucose control, lipids, inflammation, kidney and liver markers and blood counts, then combine them into an age estimate. More objective, and the inputs are things you can act on.
- Epigenetic clocks. Lab tests that read chemical marks on DNA. Widely used in research, harder to act on because the result does not tell you which habit or marker to change.
- Wearable data. Resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep and estimated VO2 max add a day-to-day signal between lab tests.
How accurate are these estimates?
Treat any biological age as an estimate with a margin of error. Results vary between methods, and even the same test can shift from one sample to the next. Some researchers argue that consumer tests are more useful for research than for individuals. That is a fair warning. A single number is not a diagnosis, and it is not a reason to skip regular checkups. The useful part is the trend over time and the specific factors behind it.
Can I change my biological age?
The evidence points to yes, in both directions. NIH-funded research found that biological age rises under severe stress and comes back down after recovery. The factors that show up again and again are the unglamorous ones: regular movement and strength training, enough sleep, not smoking, a diet that keeps blood sugar and lipids in range, and a healthy waistline.
How to find out your biological age
Start with a free estimate. The VitalHacking biological age assessment takes about two minutes and shows your estimated biological age along with the factors that are adding the most years. If you want a measured baseline, the Precision plan adds a 62-biomarker at-home blood panel every six months, and a licensed physician reviews your protocol before it reaches you. At VitalHacking the number is always shown as an estimate, and it is recalculated as new data comes in.
VitalHacking is a wellness service. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. Talk to your doctor about any health concern.
